Tool Holder Alignment

Polygon Solutions rotary broaching tool holders are engineered for rapid installation and require no internal adjustments. Proper alignment of the rotary broach with the workpiece centerline is critical to achieving dimensional accuracy, optimal tool life, and consistent form geometry.

The centerline of the tool holder must be aligned as closely as possible with the centerline of the workpiece. Misalignment can result in oversized or undersized forms, unequal corner geometry, excessive tool loading, increased thrust forces, and premature broach wear. As long as the turret tool station on a lathe, or the spindle on a milling machine, is properly aligned with the workpiece centerline, simply install the Polygon Solutions tool holder and securely clamp it into position.

IMPORTANT: Never indicate or establish machine center from the rotary broach or any component of the rotary broaching tool holder. Centerline alignment must always be established from the machine spindle or turret tooling station. Attempting to locate center from the broach or tool holder can introduce alignment errors that adversely affect form accuracy and tool performance.


Coolant and Lubrication

Although rotary broaching is inherently a low-heat machining process due to its interrupted cutting action and short tool engagement time, the use of an appropriate cutting fluid or coolant is strongly recommended to reduce friction, improve surface finish, and maximize broach service life.

When broaching materials with reduced machinability—including stainless steels, titanium alloys, Inconel, and other nickel-based superalloys—Polygon Solutions recommends the use of Polygon Solutions Rotary Broaching Cutting Fluid (Part No. CF-004). Apply several drops directly to the cutting edges of the broach immediately prior to tool engagement. This high-performance lubricant significantly reduces friction, lowers thrust forces and cutting loads, minimizes tool wear, and improves dimensional consistency while extending broach life in demanding applications.
